Metro realigns top management

Metro is tightening its internal management structure as part of the transit agency’s continuing effort to focus on better serving and meeting the needs of its passengers.

Five department chiefs whose areas of responsibility directly touch passengers were made direct reports to the General Manager. They include the rail, bus MetroAccess, safety and police departments. In addition, two Deputy General Managers will be leaving the Authority.

The changes come just three-and-one-half months after Dan Tangherlini was appointed Interim General Manager of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), and they reflect his commitment to putting the customers first.

"From day one I said that I had a ‘One Point Plan’ to put customers first," Mr. Tangherlini said. "I’ve been here only a short time, but long enough to see that this new alignment will bring a stronger passenger focus into the organization."

The five individuals who will be reporting directly to the Interim General Manager effective immediately include Metro’s Chief Operating Officer for Bus Jack Requa, Chief Operating Officer for Rail Steve Feil, Acting Chief Operating Officer for MetroAccess Christian Kent, Assistant General Manager for System Safety and Risk Protection Fred Goodine, and Metro Transit Police Chief Polly Hanson.

As part of the realignment, the Department of Customer Contract Services was eliminated. That department had oversight for the MetroAccess, parking and SmarTrip programs. In addition to the changes to MetroAccess, the Office of Parking will report to the Acting Deputy General Manager of Customer Service and Operations, and the SmarTrip Program will be under the purview of the Chief Financial Officer. The former Assistant General Manager of Customer Contract Services will instead oversee the Office of Workers’ Compensation.

In order to further streamline the efficiency of the organization and be more responsive to customers, Mr. Tangherlini said today that his realignment also included removing an additional layer of bureaucracy in the organization, specifically the position of Deputy General Manager. As a result, Deputy General Managers P. Takis Salpeas and William F. Scott II announced Friday that they will be leaving Metro.
