Metro appoints new chief operating officer for Community Transportation Services

Steve Yaffe has been appointed the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Community Transportation Services, effective July 5. Like Metro’s Chief Operating Officers for Rail and Bus, Mr. Yaffe will report directly to Metro General Manager Dan Tangherlini.

Yaffe, 50, of Falls Church, VA, is currently Fairfax County’s FASTRAN Planning Manager. He has held that post for 16 years and has 27 years of experience in transit. FASTRAN is Fairfax County’s transit service for human service agencies.

Christian Kent, who was named Acting Chief Operating Officer for MetroAccess when the new position was established two weeks ago, will continue in that capacity until Mr. Yaffe’s arrival. At that time, Mr. Kent will retain that title on a permanent basis and will continue to oversee the daily day-to-day contract operations of the paratransit service with MV Transportation.

"I look forward to working with Mr. Kent to build upon the foundation he has laid with MetroAccess, and partnering with other paratransit providers and people with disabilities to improve their overall mobility options," Mr. Yaffe said.

MetroAccess serves people with disabilities who are certified eligible to receive the paratransit service because they are unable to access Metrorail or Metrobus or other fixed-route transit services. Approximately 1.45 million passenger trips are provided on MetroAccess each year with 4,500 scheduled daily. There are 16,000 registered MetroAccess customers.
