Metro Breaks Ground on New Parking StructureAt Huntington Metrorail Station

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) officially broke ground today on an expanded parking structure at the Huntington Metrorail station. The project will add 500 parking spaces to the 3,090 already on site by summer 2007, when the project is expected to be complete.

A new $31.1 million six-level parking facility for 1,424 vehicles will replace a surface lot that was able to accommodate 924 cars.

Construction of the new parking structure located on the east side of the Huntington Metrorail station will begin next month. It is part of a mixed-use development project at the station, which includes residential, commercial and office space.

“This project is the fulfillment of a long-standing request from loyal Metro riders - that Metro provide more parking – with 1,400 new parking spaces coming here to the Huntington Station,” said Dana Kauffman, a member of Metro’s Board of Directors. “Just as important, this project will result in a wonderful new Transit-Oriented Development here at Huntington, with new town homes, condos and new office and retail space, adding to the vitality of this underutilized section of Fairfax County,” stated Mr. Kauffman.

In November 2002, Metro signed a joint agreement with Stout & Teague and Clark Realty Capital for the development of a 60-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Huntington Metrorail Station. The site is located near the intersection of Route 1 and the Capital Beltway.

Funding for the new facility comes from Fairfax County Transportation Infrastructure Investment Funds, Fairfax County surcharge funds and Fairfax County capital funds.

“This new parking structure at Huntington will provide significant benefits to our customers who use the station every day, and it will help alleviate traffic congestion in the Huntington area,” said Catherine Hudgins, a member of Metro’s Board of Directors.

Under the terms of the joint development agreement, Stout & Teague will be responsible for developing the project, zoning and site approvals, community relations and the marketing and sale of the parcels of land to the builders. The proposal calls for a 60-acre mixed-use development, including 55 town homes, 420 low-rise multi-family units, 175 high-rise condominiums, 250,000 square feet of office space, 30,000 square feet of street-level retails and 12 acres for the Fairfax County Park Authority. This joint development project is the first in Fairfax County to obtain the planned residential mixed-use zoning designation.

During the construction project, users of the Huntington Metrorail station and parking structure will see some temporary changes including the elimination of 64 parking spaces.
