Metro Readies For a Sunday Sports Tripleheader

Metro To Have Extra Personnel and to Operate Extra Trains for Patrons Attending the Capitals, Nationals and Redskins Games

This Sunday will be a super sports day for fans in Washington as the Capitals, Nationals, and Redskins are all in action and the best way to attend these sports events will be via Metro. Extra trains will be available to get fans to and from each event.

Sunday afternoon will be crowded in the Metrorail system as sports fans head to the Capitals, Nationals, and Redskins games. The Washington Capitals host the Carolina Hurricanes at 1 p.m., at the Verizon Center, the Washington Nationals host the New York Mets at 1:05 p.m., at RFK Stadium, and the Washington Redskins host the Jacksonville Jaguars at FedEx Field, starting at 4:15 p.m.

Metro will operate with six-car trains leading up to game time for each event. After the Nationals and Redskins games, Metro will have up to 14 additional trains available systemwide (a combination of six-cars and eight-cars) for patrons traveling from the Morgan Boulevard and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations on the Blue Line, from the Landover Metrorail station on the Orange Line for the Redskins game and from Stadium-Armory for the Nationals game.

After the Capitals’ game, Metro will have additional trains for patrons traveling from Gallery-Place Chinatown on the Red, Yellow and Green lines. Additionally, Metro will operate its Blue Line shortcut trains for Franconia-Springfield departing from Gallery Place-Chinatown, 10, 20, and 30 minutes after the Capitals game.

Fans headed to and from the Nationals game are reminded to use both entrances at the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station. The main entrance, closest to RFK Stadium, is located at 19th Street and Independence Avenue, S.E. The second entrance, is two blocks away at 19th Street between C and Burke Streets, S.E.

Fans headed to the Redskins game are encouraged to ride Metrorail’s Blue Line to the Morgan Boulevard Metrorail station, which is nine-tenths of a mile from the stadium. A walkway offers direct access to the stadium.

A second option for fans attending the Redskins game is to ride Metrorail’s Orange Line to the Landover Metrorail station to access the Metrobus shuttle to FedEx Field. Metrobus shuttle service will be available from the Landover station three hours before kickoff, and available two hours after the conclusion of the game. The shuttle service costs $5, with representatives from the Redskins collecting the $5 fee from Metrobus customers after they arrive at the stadium.

Individuals attending the Redskins game who park their cars at the Morgan Boulevard and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations on the Blue Line will have to pay $25 and they must have a SmarTrip® card to pay for parking when exiting these facilities. Non-Metrorail riders who park at the these stations and do not have a SmarTrip® card can purchase a card in the parking facilities. Paid parking at these two stations goes into effect three hours before kickoff, and continues two hours after the game concludes.

Metro will have additional station managers, rail supervisors, and Transit Police at the Gallery Place-Chinatown, Stadium-Armory, Morgan Boulevard, Largo Town Center and Landover Metrorail stations to assist customers.

Upon entering the Metrorail system, all fans should purchase enough value on their farecards or SmarTrip cards for their round-trip.
