Statement from Metro Board Chair Gladys Mack on Dan Tangherlini’s withdrawal from General Manager search

On behalf of the WMATA Board of Directors, I want to express our sincere disappointment that Mr. Tangherlini has withdrawn his candidacy to be the permanent General Manager for WMATA. While the Board is certainly disappointed with today’s announcement, we wish him the best as he leaves to pursue his new challenge.

Dan has done an excellent job in the eight months since he was named
Interim General Manager. Working with the Board and the staff, he has helped to restore the public’s faith and confidence in the system. In his short tenure, he has made several operational improvements. He is a regular Metro rider, and he listens to our employees and our riders, always trying to see the system through the eyes of the customer.

I believe Dan would have made an outstanding General Manager; however, he opted to accept the opportunity to work closely with the incoming new Mayor, helping to run the city and to shape policy, and we respect his decision. The Board will continue its ongoing national search for a permanent General Manager and we remain committed to finding an outstanding person to fill this critical position.

On a personal note, I want to congratulate Dan as he returns to the District of Columbia government with an even more important job of service to DC citizens. As a resident of the District of Columbia, I can only say that Metro’s loss is the District’s gain.
