New information for Red Line Riders to avoid rail delays

Bus alternatives available along Red Line

Individuals who would prefer to avoid the Red Line may consider Metrobus as an alternative. Some bus routes to consider include:

• From Silver Spring via Georgia Avenue–7th Street, consider Metrobus route 79. The terminal stand is on the south side of Wayne Avenue west of Dixon Avenue. Downtown, serves 9th Street southbound and 7th Street northbound.

• From Silver Spring via 16th Street, consider Metrobus route S9 to McPherson Square. The nearest stop to Silver Spring Metrorail station is on the north side of Colesville Road west of East-West Highway and is served on the outbound loop. Inbound passengers have to sit through a layover after the bus arrives back at Eastern Avenue and 16th Street. Outbound passengers are carried to this stop before the bus returns to Eastern Avenue and 16th Street for a layover.

• From Fort Totten, consider route 80, North Capitol Street to the Kennedy Center. The nearest stops on the Red Line include Brookland-CUA, North Capitol and H Street NW, near Union Station, 7th and H Street NW near Gallery Pl-Chinatown, and Connecticut Ave. and K Street NW, near the Farragut North and Farragut West Metrorail stations.

• From Chevy Chase Circle, consider L1 (local) to Potomac Park (18th and E Streets NW, in the vicinity of the State Department) or the L2 (local) to McPherson Square. The L4 (local) is also available; it terminates at Dupont Circle.

• From Friendship Heights, consider route 37 (limited-stop service) to Archives/Navy Memorial Metrorail station via Wisconsin Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue, 20th/21st Street, I/H Street, 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Metrobus route information is available at http://www.wmata.com/bus/.

Customers can obtain information about when their next bus will arrive by visiting Metro’s Web site (www.metroopensdoors.com) and clicking on the link to the Next Bus page. Enter the bus stop identification number found on the new, round, red, white and blue signs posted at Metrobus stops or specify the desired bus route, direction of travel and the bus stop location. Bus arrival times will appear for one or more routes serving the stop. The information on bus arrival times is automatically displayed and updated every minute. Visitors to the Web site also can see a map that displays a particular route and arrival times of the buses at particular stops.

Riders can also call 202-637-7000 and follow the prompts or say “Next Bus” to get arrival time information by phone. Riders can enter the bus stop identification number posted at the bus stop and state the bus route number on the phone and the service will provide the estimated time of arrival for their bus.
As the investigation into the June 22 train accident continues, Metro officials also are taking incremental action to move forward once the National Transportation Safety Board issues its findings.

“Whatever the NTSB recommends, we know that we will likely need to replace some standard parts, such as track circuit cable, which takes weeks to manufacture and deliver,” said Metro General Manager John Catoe. “We want to have these parts in stock and available to us.”
