Metro sets August weekend track maintenance schedule


Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes to their travel times for scheduled maintenance

In August, Metro will replace rail, cross ties, fasteners, floating slabs, and make repairs to its aerial structures to upkeep the tracks and help ensure reliable Metrorail service. Customers should expect significant travel delays during these weekends.

Throughout August, Metro will be replacing the track circuit on the Red Line between the Fort Totten and Takoma Metrorail stations. Customer can expect trains to move slower through that area seven days a week. More details on this work and delays will be posted when it is available.

Friday, August 7, to Sunday, August 9

Red Line – Metrorail customers traveling between the Medical Center and Friendship Heights Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to that travel time for their trips because Metro will make tunnel repairs, replace rail and rail fasteners that stabilize tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, August 7, to closing (midnight), on Sunday, August 9.

On Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., every other Red Line train traveling toward the Shady Grove Metrorail station will terminate at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station and return to the Glenmont Metrorail station. Throughout the weekend, all Red Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between the Shady Grove and Medical Center Metrorail stations.

Orange Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should add 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace crossties, which support the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 8 p.m., Friday, August 7, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 9.

On Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, every other Orange Line train traveling toward the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station will terminate at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station and return to the New Carrollton Metrorail station.

Friday, August 14, to Sunday, August 16

Orange Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace rail. Trains will share one track between these locations from 8 p.m., Friday, August 14, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 16.

On Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, every other Orange Line train traveling toward the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station will terminate at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station and return to the New Carrollton Metrorail station.

Green/Yellow Line – Metrorail customers traveling between the U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo and Georgia Ave-Petworth Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel time because of rail replacement. Trains will share one track between these locations from 8 p.m., Friday, August 14, to 6 p.m., on Sunday, August 16.

During this time, all Yellow Line trains will operate between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq-7th St Convention Center Metrorail stations.

Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 23

Red Line – Metrorail customers traveling between the Medical Center and Friendship Heights Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace rail, fasteners, and make tunnel repairs. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, August 21, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 23.

On Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., every other Red Line train traveling toward the Shady Grove Metrorail station will terminate at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station and return to the Glenmont Metrorail station. Throughout the weekend, all Red Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between the Shady Grove and Medical Center Metrorail stations.

Blue and Orange Line - Metrorail customers traveling between the Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will conduct maintenance on the aerial structure outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, August 22, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Sunday, August 23.

Friday, August 28, to Sunday, August 30

Red Line – Metrorail customers traveling between the Medical Center and Friendship Heights Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will make tunnel repairs, replace rail and fasteners. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, August 28, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 30.

On Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., every other Red Line train traveling toward the Shady Grove Metrorail station will terminate at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station and return to the Glenmont Metrorail station. Throughout the weekend, all Red Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between the Shady Grove and Medical Center Metrorail stations.

Orange Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the East Falls Church and Ballston-MU Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes of travel time to their trips because Metro will replace crossties, the track support structures. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, August 28, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 30.

Yellow/Green Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the Georgia Ave-Petworth and Fort Totten Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes of travel time to their trips because of rail replacement. Trains will share one track between these locations from 8 p.m., Friday, August 28, to 6 p.m., on Sunday, August 30.
