Metro Board initiates rail yard rehabilitation program

Program includes rehabilitation of three rail maintenance yards

The Metro Board Planning, Development and Real Estate Committee today (September 10) gave preliminary approval to the transit agency=s third system infrastructure and rehabilitation program to cover all aspects of Metro’s maintenance repairs throughout the Metrorail system and the first contract specifically designed for rail yard facilities.

The first rail yard operations and maintenance facilities rehabilitation program is designed to cover all maintenance work at Metro’s Alexandria, Brentwood and New Carrollton rail yards.

Work to be performed at these three rail yards includes replacing building equipment, upgrading the public address systems, upgrading traction power and tie-breaker substations, and making repairs to the operations and maintenance facilities, service and inspections shops and track inspection facilities.

The Metro Board will vote to initiate a contract on the program at the September 24 Board of Directors meeting. Metro expects to award a contract for this scope of work next summer.

If approved, Metro expects to finish the rehabilitation program at these three rail yards by the end of 2012. The program budget for this work is $127.7 million.
