Columbus Day weekend work to close two Metrorail stations and part of a third
Waterfront-SEU and Archives-Navy Mem'l-Penn Quarter stations to close; No Green Line service at L'Enfant Plaza
The Waterfront-SEU and Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter Metrorail stations will be closed, and the Green Line also will be closed at the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station from 10:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 9, through Monday, Oct. 12, with no service at these stations for three consecutive days. The Blue and Orange Line at the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station will not be affected. Service will resume at all Metrorail stations on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
To help people get around the closures, the Yellow Line will be rerouted and will follow the Blue Line route between the Pentagon and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations with a stop at the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station on the lower level. Shuttle buses also will be available.
During Columbus Day weekend, Metro will replace the entire rail interlocking (four switches) at the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station on the Green and Yellow lines, and will close the Yellow Line Bridge over the Potomac River to conduct an annual safety inspection and conduct track maintenance. This means there will be no Yellow Line service between the Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.
Columbus Day Weekend Green and Yellow Line Metrorail Service
The Green Line will be closed between the Navy Yard and Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail stations. The Waterfront-SEU and Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter Metrorail stations will be closed. There will be no Green Line service at the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station.
The Green Line will operate in two segments -- between the Branch Avenue and Navy Yard Metrorail stations and between the Greenbelt and Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail stations.
On Friday, Oct. 9, from 10:30 p.m. through closing (3 a.m.), the Yellow Line will operate between the Huntington and Pentagon Metrorail stations. However, from Saturday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 12, the Yellow Line will be rerouted and will run between the Huntington and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations.
From Saturday, Oct. 10, to Monday, Oct. 12, all Green and Yellow Line trains will operate every 12 to 15 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes after 9:30 p.m.
The Red, Blue and Orange lines will not be impacted by this work.
Columbus Day Weekend Shuttle Bus Service
From 10:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, to closing (midnight) on Monday, Oct. 12, Metro will operate these free shuttle buses between the Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station and:
- Navy Yard Metrorail station with stops at Waterfront-SEU, L’Enfant Plaza and Archives-Navy Mem’l-Penn Quarter Metrorail stations. This shuttle bus will depart from the Navy Yard Metrorail station (New Jersey Ave., SE) and stop at the Waterfront Metrorail station (4th St., SW), the L’Enfant Plaza Metrorail station (Maryland Ave., SW), the Archives-Navy Mem’l Penn Quarter Metrorail station (7th St., NW), and the Gallery-Pl Chinatown Metrorail station (G Street).
- Navy Yard Metrorail station with no stops in between. This shuttle bus will depart from the Navy Yard Metrorail station (New Jersey Ave., SE) and the Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station (G St.)
- Anacostia Metrorail station with no stops in between. This shuttle bus will depart from the Anacostia Metrorail station bus bay A and operate directly to the Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station (G St).
This weekend’s free shuttle buses will operate every 12 to 15 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes after 9:30 p.m.
Additional Weekend Events
On Sunday, Oct. 11, there will be a National Equality March on the National Mall and the “Bike for the Heart” ride on Pennsylvania Ave., NW. On Monday, Oct. 12, the Washington Capitals will play at the Verizon Center. Metro reminds customers riding or connecting to the Yellow and Green lines who will be attending these events to add at least 45 minutes into their travel time and to consider the following travel options:
- People leaving the National Equality March from the U.S. Capitol and returning to Union Station and all Red Line stations should walk north on 1st St., make a right onto Louisiana Ave. to Union Station.
- People leaving the National Equality March from the U.S. Capitol and traveling to RFK Stadium should walk south on 3rd St., to the Federal Center SW Metrorail station and board the Orange Line to the New Carrollton Metrorail station or the Blue Line to the Largo Town Center Metrorail station.
- Customers who normally use the Navy Yard Metrorail station on the Green Line can walk to the Capitol South Metrorail station to catch the Blue or Orange Line.
- Customers traveling to the Archives/Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter area can exit at the Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station on the Red and Green lines or the Federal Triangle Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange lines and walk to Archives/Navy Memorial via 7th St., NW.
- Customers riding the Yellow Line from Virginia will be rerouted to follow the Blue Line and they can transfer at Metro Center to the Red Line and ride one stop to Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail station.
- Customers riding the Green Line from the Greenbelt Metrorail station can transfer at the Fort Totten Metrorail station and instead take the Red Line toward downtown Washington.
- Free direct shuttle bus service will be available all weekend between the Anacostia, Navy Yard and Gallery Pl-Chinatown Metrorail stations.
Customer Assistance:
From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, to Monday, Oct. 12, there will be 88 Metro employees working between the Navy Yard and Gallery-Pl Chinatown Metrorail stations to help customers navigate around the track work.
To alert customers about this work, Metro will distribute a free brochure, place notices and signs in Metrorail stations and make train and station system announcements.
