New parking garage opens at Minnesota Avenue Metrorail station on Monday, Nov. 16

Surface parking lot closes at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, through entire weekend

A new parking garage at the Minnesota Avenue Metrorail station on the Orange Line in Washington, DC, will open for business on Monday, Nov. 16, at 5 a.m. and will replace a surface parking lot with the same number of parking spaces. The $16 million, four-level parking facility for 333 vehicles will open after three years of construction.

In anticipation of the opening of the new garage, the surface lot at Minnesota Avenue will close on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., while the District of Columbia reconfigures traffic patterns for the opening of the new garage.

The new garage, constructed by the District of Columbia, replaces a 333-space surface lot. The garage will be operated by Metro. Short-term meter parking is available and reserved parking is available at Minnesota Ave., north of Grant St, N.E.

The new parking garage at Minnesota Avenue will provide significant benefits to Metro customers who use the station every day and improve vehicle access around the station. The spaces in the new parking garage are closer to the station entrance and customers will have a direct pedestrian sidewalk connection from the garage to the station entrance.

Construction of the new parking structure began in January 2006. The garage is part of the future District of Columbia Government Center that will house the Departments of Employment and Human Services, and future mixed-use development. Funding for the new facility came from the District of Columbia.
