Metro's December weekend track maintenance schedule set

Metro curtails track maintenance during Christmas/New Year's holiday

This month, Metro will replace fasteners, make track circuit upgrades, trim leaves and weeds, and make tunnel repairs and repairs to its aerial structures to upkeep the tracks and help ensure reliable Metrorail service. Customers should expect travel delays during the weekends of Dec. 4 to 6, Dec. 11 to 13, and Dec. 18 to 20. Track work will be suspended during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weekends.

Friday, Dec. 4, to Sunday, Dec. 6

Red Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the Medical Center and Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace rail fasteners that stabilize tracks, and make tunnel repairs. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, Dec. 6.

This portion of work on the Red Line between the Medical Center and Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail stations is part of a larger multi-year Red Line rehabilitation project that will run through 2013.

Orange Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the Cheverly and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace crossties and conduct maintenance on the aerial structure outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 9:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, to 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6.

Blue and Yellow Line -- Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street (Blue Line) Metrorail stations should add 30 minutes of travel time for their trips because Metro will be trimming weeds and leaves along the rail tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6.

All Blue and Yellow Line trains will operate to the Huntington Metrorail station during these times. Metro will operate a special Blue Line shuttle train between the Franconia-Springfield and King Street Metrorail stations. At King Street, customers will be able to catch a Blue or Yellow Line train to the Largo Town Center or Fort Totten Metrorail stations.

Metrorail customers who usually park at Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street Metrorail stations can avoid the delays if they park at the Huntington Metrorail station.
