Metrobus service improvements on D routes in the District of Columbia

D1, D3, D4 route changes, schedule changes on D5, D6 and D8 to take effect Dec. 27

A number of changes are coming to the D bus routes in the District of Columbia beginning Sunday, December 27, as part of an effort to enhance the reliability of Metrobus service for customers.

Three bus lines will be restructured and will operate with new line names, the Glover Park – Federal Triangle Line (D1), Ivy City – Dupont Circle Line (D3) and Ivy City – Franklin Square Line (D4). Three other bus lines, D5, D6, and D8, will be changed to provide greater frequency of bus service in combination with the new routes.

Earlier this year, Metro hosted four public meetings on the D bus lines as part of a Service Evaluation Study to review the productivity, travel time and reliability and to make recommendations for more efficient bus operations. Customer feedback, along with information from bus operators and planners was used to examine ridership, frequency, travel time, reliability and other quality-of-service indicators for the D bus lines. Collectively, the D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6 and D8 bus routes carry 15,000 passengers daily.

Metrobus service and new route name changes will be as follows:

D1 Glover Park – Federal Triangle Line

The route will be changed to operate between Glover Park and Federal Triangle. Eastbound buses will follow the regular route from Glover Park to 13th and E Streets, NW, then continue via 13th Street, left on Pennsylvania Avenue to the terminal stand on the west side of 10th Street, NW. The westbound route will begin at this terminal stand and continue via Constitution Avenue, right on 12th Street, left on Pennsylvania Avenue, right on 13th Street and resume the regular route.

Two new buses will be scheduled to leave eastbound from Glover Park at 9:05 a.m. and westbound from Federal Triangle at 7:05 p.m. The bus schedule will change.

D3 Ivy City – Dupont Circle Line

The route will be shortened to operate between Ivy City and Dupont Circle. Westbound trips will follow the regular route and terminate at P and 22nd Streets, NW, with some trips extended to 35th Street and Reservoir Road, NW. All eastbound trips will begin at Massachusetts Avenue and 20th Street, NW, and follow the regular route to Ivy City. The schedule will be adjusted slightly.

D4 Ivy City – Franklin Square Line

The route will change to operate between Ivy City and Franklin Square. Westbound buses will follow the regular route to K and North Capitol Streets then continue via K Street, left on 6th Street, right on Massachusetts Avenue, back onto K Street, then onto New York Avenue, and continue to the new terminal stand on the north side of I (Eye) Street, NW, west of 13th Street. The eastbound route will begin at this terminal stand, then continue via 14th Street, right on K Street, right on 10th Street, left on New York Avenue, back onto K Street, onto Massachusetts Avenue, left on 6th Street, again on K Street and will then resume the regular route to Ivy City from K and North Capitol Streets.

Route D4 will no longer service Union Station. Customers from the Ivy City and Trinidad areas will continue to have service to Union Station on routes D3 and D8.

Weekday, Saturday and Sunday schedules will change. Buses will run every 15 minutes during morning and afternoon peak periods and every 30 minutes during the off-peak period and weekends.

Two additional westbound buses will be scheduled to depart at 3:20 and 6:55 p.m. from Farragut Square.
