Metro to operate extra bus service in anticipation of Christmas and New Year's travel to BWI and Dulles airports
Metrobus service to BWI and Dulles Airports gives travelers convenient options
As area residents prepare for Christmas and New Year’s holiday travel, Metro is preparing to make it easier for people who are traveling to and from the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and the Washington Dulles International Airport with additional bus service.
Metrobus to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport
Air travelers can reach BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport by riding Metro’s Green Line to the Greenbelt Metrorail station and then catching the B30 Metrobus, which provides direct service from the train station to the airport for $3.10, or $3 using a SmarTrip card.
On Wednesday, Dec. 23, Monday, Dec. 28, and Sunday, Jan. 3, Metro will provide service every 20 minutes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Additional southbound trips from BWI Airport to the Greenbelt Metrorail station will be available on Sunday, Dec. 27, and Monday, Jan. 4.
Additional buses will be available if there is high demand during the day on Saturday, Dec. 19, Thursday, Dec. 24, or Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Metrobus to Washington Dulles International Airport
Air travelers have two options to reach Dulles Airport. One option is to take Metro’s Orange Line to the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station and then take the Washington Flyer bus to the airport.
A second option for air travelers is to take the 5A Metrobus at the L’Enfant Plaza or Rosslyn Metrorail stations, which provides direct service to the airport for $3.10, or $3 using a SmarTrip card.
From Tuesday, Dec. 22 to Thursday, Dec. 24, and again from Tuesday, Dec. 29 to Thursday, Dec. 31, the 5A will operate every 15 to 20 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The extra service trips will bypass the Tysons-Westpark Transit Station and the Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride lot in order to provide direct service for airline passengers between downtown Washington, Rosslyn and the airport.
On Saturday, Jan. 2 , the 5A will operate every 30 minutes from noon to 11 p.m. Depending on ridership demand, extra service will be available on Sunday, Jan. 3.
Metro reminds all riders traveling on the B30 and the 5A that ridership will be heavy. Customers should plan to allow for some variation in travel time and to minimize the size of luggage brought on the bus to ensure space for everyone.
