Power problem stalls Orange Line train near Cheverly

Unauthorized person was on the tracks

An Orange Line train stopped before it reached the Cheverly Metrorail station for about an hour and 40 minutes today due to a loss of power on the track around 2:10 p.m.
Metrorail received a report of an unauthorized person on the tracks at Cheverly and immediately turned off power to the electrified third rail. The person was removed from the tracks. Unfortunately, when Metro officials initially tried to restore power, they were unable to do so. Metro workers were able to address the problem and restore power to the track at 3:50 p.m.

The six-car, Vienna-bound train stopped before reaching the station and the approximately 75 passengers onboard were notified by the train operator about the power problem.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the man found on the tracks showed signs of intoxication. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Orange Line trains shared one track between the Cheverly and New Carrollton Metrorail stations during the incident. However, delays were minor because intervals between trains at that time of day are about 12 minutes apart.
