Metro will run extra trains and buses midday Christmas Eve

Extra service supports workers with early dismissal

Santa is coming early for Metro customers riding during the midday on Christmas Eve. Whether they’re heading home for the holidays or to the mall for some last minute shopping, riders will get there quicker as Metrorail and Metrobus offer more service this afternoon.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m., Metrorail will put five extra trains in service systemwide and Metrobus will supplement regular bus service at noon. Most of the extra service will be in downtown Washington, D.C., where there are many federal government buildings. Metro officials will monitor ridership on all lines and add service as necessary in the early afternoon.

Metro anticipates heavier-than-usual ridership at lunchtime today because federal workers have been given a half-day vacation on Christmas Eve.

“The extra service will help riders get ho-ho-home for the holidays,” said one of Metro’s elves. “We want to wish our riders a safe and happy holiday season.”

As a reminder, Metrorail will remain open until midnight tonight. Metrobus will operate a normal weekday schedule and MetroAccess will operate normally.

Metrobus also is running extra service on the 5A to Washington Dulles International Airport today. Buses are running every 15 to 20 minutes until 10:30 p.m. Metrobus also will provide extra buses for the B30 to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport today as needed.

On Christmas Day, Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at midnight. Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess will operate normally.
