Cracked rail discovered near Forest Glen Metrorail station

Minimal delays to continue on the Red Line

At close to noon today (Wednesday, Jan. 6) a cracked rail was discovered outside the Forest Glen Metrorail station in the direction of Shady Grove that caused mid-day delays in both directions on the Red Line.

Trains shared a single track between Forest Glen and Silver Spring Metrorail stations until Metro’s track repair crew arrived on scene and placed a brace on the cracked rail as a temporary fix. The repair crew will return later in the evening to install a permanent fix that involves cutting out the area with the crack and replacing it with a new piece.

As of 2:10 p.m. service resumed on both tracks, and riders should expect minimal delays throughout the rush hour period as trains will follow a speed restriction of 15 mph where the temporary fix was made. Service is expected to be back to normal on Thursday morning.
