Metro's Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend track work on schedule

No Red Line service between White Flint and Medical Center Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail station remains closed

Weekend track rehabilitation work on the Red Line between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center Metrorail stations that has resulted in the Grosvenor-Strathmore station being closed during the three-day Martin Luther King, Jr, weekend is progressing on schedule. The Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail station is expected to reopen on time -- at 5 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Jan. 19.

A portion of this work on the Red Line is part of a larger, multi-year Red Line rehabilitation project that will run through 2013.

The free shuttle buses have been busy throughout the weekend with buses filling up as trains empty at the White Flint and Medical Center Metrorail stations. Through Saturday, 17,634 people have used the shuttle buses to help complete their trips.

Seventy-two additional Metro employees along with Metro Transit Police officers have been on site guiding customers from the rail platforms to the shuttle buses to assist them in completing their trips. They also have been busy answering questions from customers.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Monday Service

As a reminder, the Metrorail system will open at 5 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 18, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. All Red Line trains will depart every 7 ½ minutes from Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations during the day and every 15 minutes after 9:30 p.m.

All Blue, Orange, Green and Yellow line trains will operate every 15 minutes during the day from the end of each rail terminal, and after 9:30 p.m., every 20 minutes from the end of each line.

On Monday, Jan. 18, the last Red Line train departing the Shady Grove Metrorail station for the White Flint Metrorail station will leave 30 minutes earlier than usual. This will allow for customers to connect to the free shuttle buses and to the last trains departing the Medical Center Metrorail station to the Glenmont Metrorail stations.

On Monday, Jan. 18, the last Red Line train will depart Shady Grove at 11 p.m., Rockville at 11:04 p.m., Twinbrook at 11:07 p.m., and arrive at White Flint at 11:09 p.m. The last train departing Medical Center on Monday, Jan. 18, will leave at 11:45 p.m.

Metro’s free shuttle bus service on the Red Line will also begin at 5 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, and will continue until the system closes at midnight.

Throughout the remainder of the day, the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metrorail station is closed and there is no Red Line service between the White Flint and Medical Center Metrorail stations.

The Red Line is operating in two segments -- between the Shady Grove and White Flint Metrorail stations and between the Glenmont and Medical Center Metrorail stations.
