Emergency response active shooter exercise ends

Drill tested regional response to Metro-related incident

Metro’s emergency response active shooter exercise at the Friendship Heights Metrorail station ended at 2 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 25.

The drill simulated gunfire between two shooters in the station that resulted in multiple “passengers” injured or killed. Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) patrol officers and special response team members responded to the “incident,” along with the police, fire and emergency medical services personnel from the District of Columbia and Montgomery County, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The drill enabled Metro and its regional partners to test the integrated response and incident coordination among MTPD, Metro emergency response and operations personnel, and local and federal law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services agencies.

The exercise took place after the Metrorail system closed so that passengers were not inconvenienced by the police and emergency response activity. Residents in the area of the Friendship Heights Metrorail station may have seen numerous police, fire and emergency response vehicles, but there was no emergency. It was just a drill.
