Two rail cars derail inside New Carrollton Rail Yard

No injuries, service not affected

The two middle cars of a six-car train derailed inside the New Carrollton Metrorail Yard today, April 23, at about 7:45 p.m. There were no injuries and rail service was not affected.

The train finished servicing the New Carrollton Metrorail station and had just returned to the rail yard when the incident took place. There were no customers on board the train because the train was in the rail yard and was not in service.

The train was comprised of rail car numbers 6019 (first car), 6018, 5166, 5167, 5059 and 5068. The third and fourth cars of the train, 5166 and 5167, derailed.

Metro safety and rail officials have started an investigation into what caused the derailment.

It is standard operating procedure to take the train operator out of service as part of the investigatory process. The operator will undergo routine post-incident tests.

The Tri-State Oversight Committee was notified of the incident as is standard operating procedure. The National Transportation Safety Board also was notified as a courtesy to the federal safety agency.
