Metro sets June weeknight track maintenance schedule
Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes for weeknight travel, while Metro works to maintain a state of good repair on the rails
On most weeknights in June, Metro employees will replace track fasteners, upgrade track circuits, weld new rail on the tracks, make repairs to concrete slabs underneath the rails and repair surfaces underneath the rails all in an effort to maintain the rail system in a state of good repair. Customers should add at least 20 to 30 minutes of additional travel time to their schedules from Sunday to Thursday nights between 10 p.m. until closing (midnight) on all rail lines. Customers should expect lengthy waits between trains during this timeframe.
Western end of Red Line Track Maintenance Sunday through Thursday nights
Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro personnel to make necessary repairs to the platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from June 21 to 25; and June 27 to 30.
This portion of vital work on the Red Line between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations is in conjunction with the Red Line rehabilitation project, which is extending the lifecycle of the track and related systems by rebuilding those areas.
Eastern end of Red Line Track Maintenance Monday through Thursday nights
Metrorail customers traveling between the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood and Fort Totten Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow personnel to upgrade the surface underneath the tracks in that area in order to maintain reliable service through that area of the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from June 1 to 3.
To help expedite rail travel into downtown Washington, every other Red Line train traveling toward the Glenmont Metrorail station will terminate at the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail station and will return to the Shady Grove Metrorail station.
Blue Line Track Maintenance Tuesday through Thursday nights
Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to replace the systems that support the concrete slabs underneath the rails in that area to help maintain reliable rail service. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from June 1 to 3.
Blue Line Track Maintenance Monday through Thursday nights
Metrorail customers traveling between the Arlington Cemetery and Foggy Bottom-GWU Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will be replacing old fasteners and replacing them with new ones to stabilize the tracks to maintain service reliability. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from June 7 to 10; June 14 to 17; and June 21 to 24.
Blue and Orange Line Track Maintenance Sunday through Wednesday nights
Metrorail customers traveling between the Eastern Market Metrorail and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations on the Blue and Orange Lines should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will be making track circuit upgrades needed to maintain service reliability. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) from June 27 to 30.
