Metro sets July weeknight track maintenance schedule


Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes for weeknight travel while Metro works to maintain a state of good repair on the rails

On most weeknights in July, Metro employees will replace track fasteners, cross ties, weld new rail on the tracks, make repairs to concrete slabs underneath the rails and make station platform repairs all in an effort to maintain the rail system in a state of good repair and help provide reliable service. Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes of additional travel time to their schedules from Sunday to Thursday nights between 10 p.m. until closing (midnight) on all rail lines. Customers should expect lengthy waits between trains during this timeframe.

Western end of Red Line Track Maintenance Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro personnel to replace old cross ties to return the tracks to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from July 5 to 8.

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro personnel to make necessary repairs to the Rockville Metrorail station’s deteriorated platform to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from July 12 to 15; July 19 to 22; and July 25 to July 29.

This portion of vital work on the Red Line between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations is in conjunction with the Red Line rehabilitation project, which is extending the lifecycle of the track and related systems by rebuilding those areas.

Eastern end of Red Line Track Maintenance Monday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow personnel to install new rail and cross ties in that area to maintain reliable service through that area of the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from July 19 to 22; and July 25 to 29.

Blue Line Track Maintenance Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to replace the systems that support the concrete slabs underneath the rails in that area to help maintain reliable rail service. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from July 14 to 15; July 18 to 22; and July 26 to 29.

Blue Line Track Maintenance Monday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Arlington Cemetery and Foggy Bottom-GWU Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will be replacing old fasteners to stabilize the tracks to maintain service reliability. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., through closing (midnight) from July 5 to 8.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metrorail stations on either the Blue or Yellow Lines should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will be replacing old rail fasteners and replacing them with new ones to stabilize the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 11 p.m. through closing (midnight) from July 14 to 15; July 21 to 22; and July 25 to 29.

During this time, all Yellow Line trains will terminate at the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Huntington Metrorail stations on the Yellow Line and between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street Metrorail stations on the Blue Line should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 11 p.m. through closing (midnight) from July 19 to 20.

Green Line Track Maintenance Monday and Tuesday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Fort Totten and Prince George’s Plaza Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations on from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) on July 26 and 27.
