New web page features benefits of Metro's Transit Oriented Development projects

Projects promote smart growth, access to public transportation

Metro has launched a new web page that highlights dozens of current and recently completed Transit Oriented Development projects that promote walkable, sustainable communities and provide access to an array of activities and public transportation.

The web page can be found at Metro’s Joint Development and Real Estate page, http://www.wmata.com/business/joint_development_opportunities/. Details about more than 20 projects are listed, including location, acreage, project details, site plans and developer information.

Metro has a robust Transit Oriented Development program that features the benefits of smart growth principles throughout the 1,500 square mile area that Metro serves across the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

“The idea behind Metro’s real estate program is to maximize the use of land that is adjacent to Metrorail stations to create vibrant places where people can live, work, shop and play and where public transportation is an attractive option for getting around,” said Steven Goldin, Metro’s Director of Real Estate.

“We’ve seen great success at stations along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor in Arlington and in Montgomery County in Bethesda and Silver Spring, and we are working to accelerate that type of development near other Metrorail stations,” he said.

Major projects that are currently in the works include development at Twinbrook and White Flint Metrorail stations along Rockville Pike in Maryland and redevelopment of the Arlington Bus Garage near Ballston Metrorail station in Arlington.
