Donated artwork selected for Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail station

Art in stations enhance travel experience for Metro riders

Passing through the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail station is about to become a more cultural experience.

The Customer Service, Operations and Safety Committee of the Metro Board of Directors preliminary accepted the donation of new artwork for the station today (July 8).

Metro’s Art in Transit Program worked with the Chinatown Community Cultural Center to select the art, a four-paneled piece by Maryland-based artist Martha Jackson Jarvis. The art will be installed at the southeast entrance of the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail station at 7th and F streets next spring.

Metro worked closely with the Chinatown Community Cultural Center, DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities (DCAH), the artist and community representatives to select the art. DCAH, Target and Pepco are funding the fabrication and installation of the artwork.

Metro’s Art in Transit Program works with artists, community groups, government agencies and businesses to select and install artwork in the Metro system that captures the spirit and vitality of the region, and enhances the travel experience.

The full Metro Board is expected to vote on the art donation on July 22.
