Metro sets August weekend track maintenance schedule

Work planned on all rail lines to maintain state of good repair

In August, Metro will repair a rail switch outside the Farragut North Metrorail station on the Red Line and conduct major track work on all five of Metro’s rail lines to keep and maintain the rail system in a state of good repair. All weekend projects will impact travel times and cause delays.

Friday, August 6, to Sunday, August 8

Red Line – Metrorail customers traveling between the Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square Metrorail stations on the Red Line should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will upgrade a rail switch outside the Farragut North Metrorail station. A switch is an intersection in the track, where trains can “switch” from one track to another, depending on their destination and route. Trains will share track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m., Friday, August 6, to closing (midnight) Sunday, August 8.

On Saturday, August 7, and Sunday, August 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Red Line trains will depart approximately every 10 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations. Every other train leaving the Shady Grove Metrorail station will terminate at the Dupont Circle Metrorail station. Every other train leaving the Glenmont Metrorail station will terminate at the Union Station Metrorail station. At all other times during the weekend, Red Line trains will depart approximately every 20 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

Additionally, the last trains departing the Glenmont Metrorail station will leave 11 minutes earlier than usual. The last trains will depart Glenmont at 2:26 a.m. on Friday, August 6, and Saturday, August 7, and 11:26 p.m., on Sunday, August 8.

For riders who would like to bypass the single-tracking between the Judiciary Square and Dupont Circle Metrorail stations, Metrobus will operate additional service on the following routes:

• Route 80 North Capitol Street line: This line originates at the Fort Totten Metrorail station and serves the Brookland-CUA, Gallery Place and Farragut North Metrorail stations and passes within one block of the Union Station (N. Capitol Street) and Metro Center ( H Street) Metrorail stations.

• Route 42, Mount Pleasant Line: This line originates at the Gallery Place Metrorail station and serves the Metro Center, McPherson Square, Farragut North and Dupont Circle Metrorail stations.

• Route L2, Connecticut Avenue Line: This line services the Farragut North and Dupont Circle Metrorail stations, and uses Connecticut Avenue to reach the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan, Cleveland Park and Van Ness-UDC Metrorail stations.

Metrobuses running on these three lines will operate every 10 to 15 minutes during the weekend. Specific schedule and route information will be posted on Metro’s website prior to the weekend track work.

In addition to Metrobus, riders may wish to consider the DC Circulator. The DC Circulator’s Woodley Park/Adams Morgan to McPherson Square Metrorail station route provides bus service from the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan Metrorail station to Columbia Heights, 14th and U Streets N.W., and the McPherson Square Metrorail station. The DC Circulator’s Georgetown to Union Station Metrorail station route provides service from Union Station to Georgetown along Massachusetts Avenue N.W., and K Street that also serves the Farragut North Metrorail station and stops within a block of the McPherson Square, Farragut West and Foggy Bottom-GWU Metrorail stations.
