Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on Red, Blue, Yellow, Orange lines

Upgrades being made to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (July 30-August 1) Metro will make upgrades to its track, platforms and bridges on the Red, Blue, Yellow and Orange lines to improve reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work aimed at keeping the railroad in a state of good repair, riders can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Red Line Platform Rehabilitation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will make repairs to the deteriorated platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m., Friday, July 30 to closing, (midnight) on Sunday, August 1.

Red Line Bridge Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will conduct maintenance on a portion of elevated tracks that cross a bridge outside the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station. The work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area of the track. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, July 30, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 1.

On Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1, all Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

For people traveling between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations, trains will operate approximately every 8 to 9 minutes.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Metrorail stations on the Blue Line and between the Braddock Road and Huntington Metrorail stations on the Yellow Line should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace old cross ties and weld rail in that area of the Blue Line to maintain a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m., Friday, July 30, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 1.

On Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1, all Blue Line trains will operate every 30 minutes between the Largo Town Center and Huntington Metrorail stations. Metro will operate a special Blue Line shuttle train that will depart approximately every 30 minutes at 17 minutes and 47 minutes after the hour between the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station and the King Street Metrorail station. From there, customers will be able to catch another Blue or Yellow Line train headed toward Washington.

On Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1, all Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station approximately every 30 minutes at 2 minutes and 32 minutes after the hour and will operate to the Greenbelt Metrorail station.

Orange Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Cheverly Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to weld new rail on the tracks in that area of the Orange Line to maintain a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1.
