Power outage temporarily closes Friendship Heights Metrorail station

Trains passing through the station without stopping

The Friendship Heights Metrorail station is temporarily closed for safety reasons due to a power outage associated with thunderstorm activity that darkened the station. Trains are able to pass through the station, but they are not stopping.

The station was closed to ensure customer safety due to a lack of lighting. The station has no electricity other than on the tracks, so there are no operating elevators, escalators, fare vending machines, faregates or lights.

The station closed at about 2 p.m. Free shuttle buses are available at the Friendship Heights and Tenleytown-AU Metrorail stations to take people around the station closure, however a bus can only accommodate about 50 riders, so people needing to enter or exit the rail system at Friendship Heights will need to wait for a shuttle bus to do so.
