New signs on fare machines will clarify fares for riders

Fare change to be implemented Tuesday

Fare sign in Metrorail stationsMetrorail’s second phase of fare changes will take effect Tuesday, August 3, as Metro makes sign changes to clarify the fares posted on the signs on fare vending machines and station kiosks.

Today, August 2, paper signs will be affixed to fare vendors and station kiosks. The signs will inform customers that the fares printed on the signs apply to riders paying with SmarTrip® cards. Riders purchasing paper fare cards will need to pay 25 cents more than the cost posted on the signs. The fares shown are one-way fares when using a SmarTrip® card.

Metro is revising the permanent signs, which will be installed in the next few weeks. In the meantime, this week, temporary decals will replace the paper signs and will remain in place until the permanent signs are manufactured.

The revised permanent signs will list the paper fare card one-way trip prices and include a line that states that fares paid with a SmarTrip® card will be 25 cents less on each ride. This permanent sign will coincide with the implementation of the morning peak-of-the-peak fare, which will take effect later this month.
