Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on the Red, Blue and Yellow lines

Upgrades being made to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (August 20-22) Metro will upgrade its track, platforms and bridges on the Red, Blue and Yellow lines to improve reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, riders can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

On Saturday, August 21, at 7 p.m., the Washington Redskins play the Baltimore Ravens at FedEx Field. Fans attending the football game and connecting to the Blue Line should add at least 30 minutes to their travel times due to this weekend’s track maintenance.

Red Line Platform Rehabilitation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will repair the deteriorated platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, August 20, to closing, (midnight) on Sunday, August 22.

Red Line Bridge Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will conduct necessary maintenance on a portion of elevated tracks outside the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station. This work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area of the track. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, August 20, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 22.

On Saturday, August 21, and Sunday, August 22, all Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

For people traveling between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations, trains will operate approximately every 8 to 9 minutes.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Metrorail stations on the Blue Line and between the Braddock Road and Huntington Metrorail stations on the Yellow Line should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace old cross ties and weld rail in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, August 20, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 22.

On Saturday, August 21, and Sunday, August 22, Blue Line trains will be rerouted to operate between the Largo Town Center and Huntington Metrorail stations. Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station every 30 minutes at approximately 26 minutes and 56 minutes after the hour. Blue Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station at the top of the hour and 30 minutes after the hour. Customers who use the Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street Metrorail station will need to use a Blue Line shuttle train to the King Street Metrorail station. The Blue Line shuttle train will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station approximately every 30 minutes at 17 minutes and 47 minutes after the hour to the King Street Metrorail station. From there, customers will be able to catch another Blue or Yellow Line train headed toward Washington.

On Saturday, August 21, and Sunday, August 22, all Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station approximately every 30 minutes at 2 minutes and 32 minutes after the hour and will operate to the Greenbelt Metrorail station.
