Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green lines

Upgrades being made to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (August 27-29) Metro will upgrade its track and platforms and trim weeds on the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green lines to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, riders can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

On Saturday, August 28, a rally is scheduled at the Lincoln Memorial from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The closest Metrorail stations to the Lincoln Memorial are the Foggy Bottom and Smithsonian Metrorail stations on the Blue and Orange lines. People attending the event at the Lincoln Memorial and connecting to the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green lines should add at least 30 minutes to their travel times due to this weekend’s track maintenance.

Red Line Platform Rehabilitation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will repair the deteriorated platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, August 27, to closing, (midnight) on Sunday, August 29.

Blue Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to replace concrete slabs underneath the rails to help ensure more reliable service and to keep the track bed in a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, August 27, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, August 29.

From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, and Sunday, August 29, every other Blue Line train traveling in the direction of the Largo Town Center Metrorail station will terminate at the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station and return to either the Huntington or Franconia-Springfield Metrorail stations.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street and Huntington Metrorail stations on the Blue and Yellow lines should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to trim weeds along the tracks. Blue Line trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 29.

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 29, all Blue Line trains will be rerouted to operate between the Largo Town Center and Huntington Metrorail stations. Customers who use the Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street Metrorail stations during these times will need to take a Blue Line “shuttle train” to the King Street Metrorail station. From there, customers will be able to catch another Blue or Yellow Line train headed toward Washington. The Blue Line shuttle train will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station approximately every 18 minutes on Saturday, August 28 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and approximately every 15 minutes on Sunday, August 29 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to the King Street Metrorail station.

Green Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Greenbelt and College Park-U of Md Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail on the tracks in that area to keep them maintained in a state of good repair to ensure reliable service. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29.
