Metrorail to stay open an extra hour for Sept. 6 college football game

Extra trains, personnel on the Blue Line

Metrorail will stay open an additional hour on Monday, Sept. 6, to accommodate the large crowds expected to attend the Virginia Tech and Boise State University football game at FedEx Field at the request of the organizers who have paid Metro in advance to keep Metrorail open for an extra hour.

The last Blue Line train departing the Largo Town Center Metrorail station will leave at 12:24 a.m., and the Morgan Boulevard Metrorail station at 12:27 a.m., in the direction of Franconia-Springfield. If the football game should go into overtime, Metro officials will make sure trains are available to get football fans home.

In anticipation of large crowds, Metro will place additional trains into service at the end of the game. To assist riders, additional Metro personnel will be at the Morgan Boulevard Metrorail station on the Blue Line, which is a short walk from the stadium.

Fans attending the football game who park their cars at the Morgan Boulevard (635 parking spaces) or Largo Town Center (2,200 parking spaces) Metrorail stations on the Blue Line will have to pay $25 to park and they must have a SmarTrip card to pay for parking when exiting these facilities. Paid parking at these two stations begins three hours before kickoff, and continues two hours after the game concludes.

Metro encourages people to buy a round-trip fare card or have enough money on their SmarTrip card when first entering the rail system to avoid standing in long lines after the game.
