Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green lines


Upgrades being made to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (September 10-12) Metro will upgrade its track, platforms, bridges and trim weeds on the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green lines to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, riders can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Red Line Platform Rehabilitation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will repair the deteriorated platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, September 10, to closing, (midnight) on Sunday, September 12.

Red Line Bridge Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will conduct necessary maintenance on a portion of elevated tracks outside the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station. This work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area of the track. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, September 10, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, September 12.

On Saturday, September 11, and Sunday, September 12, all Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

For people traveling between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations, trains will operate approximately every 8 to 9 minutes.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Pentagon City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to all Metro workers to weld new rail on the tracks in that area to replace old rail and to keep the system in a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12.

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12, Blue Line trains will operate approximately every 30 minutes between the Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations. On Saturday, September 11, Blue Line trains will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station at approximately 23 minutes and 53 minutes after the hour, and Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station at approximately 12 minutes and 42 minutes after the hour. On Sunday, September 12, Blue Line trains will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station at approximately 5 minutes and 35 minutes after the hour and Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station at approximately 22 minutes and 52 minutes after the hour.

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12, Yellow Line trains will operate approximately every 30 minutes between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station. On Saturday, September 11, Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station at approximately 29 and 59 minutes after the hour and Yellow Line trains will depart the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station at approximately 10 minutes and 40 minutes after the hour. On Sunday, September 12, Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station at approximately 11 minutes and 41 minutes after the hour and Yellow Line trains will depart the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station at approximately 21 minutes and 51 minutes after the hour.

Green Line Weed Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Greenbelt and College Park-U of Md Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to trim weeds along the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 11.
