Metro to make extensive repairs at three bus garages

Continues state of good repair improvements

Metro’s Finance and Administration Committee today (Sept. 16) recommended to the Board that Metro staff award necessary contracts to rehabilitate the Landover, Northern and Western bus garages, as well as other bus facilities.

The improvements at bus garages and support facilities are part of the agency’s overall plan to develop and maintain a state of good repair throughout the entire transit system.

At the 103-year-old Northern Bus Garage, one of the major improvements will be the restoration of the facility’s employee parking deck, which will remove employee vehicles from surrounding neighborhood streets. Metro also plans to improve the facility’s lighting and the electrical system, as well as upgrade an emergency diesel generator, vehicle chassis wash bay, air compressor, public address system, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.

The Western Bus Garage, which has been in operation for 65 years, will get new underground storage tanks and a fuel distribution system. Additional work will include upgrading the vehicle chassis wash bay, air compressors, public address system and HVAC system, as well as repairing the concrete floor slab.

The Landover Bus Garage will get new non-revenue vehicle refueling equipment, storage tanks, a fuel distribution system and an emergency diesel generator set. The 21-year-old facility will also get upgrades to the sprinkler system, bus washer, fire alarm system, heating boiler plant, HVAC and public address systems, chassis cleaning bay, air compressors and bus lifts. Metro will also increase parking; rebuild electrical distribution and lighting systems; and construct a bus prep, paint and material storage facility. Along with these operationally focused improvements, Metro will address areas of environmental concern, such as upgrading oil-water separators and storm water management and gray water systems.

Metro will also repave the lot and replace a heating boiler plant at Four Mile Run Bus Garage, and make mechanical and electrical repairs at Bladensburg Bus Garage.

Work at a supply and a storage facility that support Metrobus operations will include rehabbing of lighting and distribution systems, replacing or upgrading facility equipment, repaving parking lots and expanding storage capacity. Environmental improvements at theses facilities will include repairs to hazardous material storage areas and storm water management and gray water systems.

Metro has nine bus garages that house and maintain its fleet of 1,500 buses.
