Metro to improve lighting at West Falls Church Metrorail station

Installation of new lights on bus bay canopies to improve safety, service reliability

The West Falls Church Metrorail station bus bay canopies, which were erected in January, will have lighting installed to enhance safety and improve service for commuters using the Fairfax Connector and Dulles Access buses from that location.

The canopies were completed without lighting due to a lack of resources, however, $400,000 in Virginia Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds and $100,000 in matching funds from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT) will enable Metro to add four-foot long 54W high-output fluorescent lighting by late January 2011.

“The new lighting will provide for better visibility and in turn, improve safety, security and comfort for our customers as they wait for their buses,” said Catherine Hudgins, Chair of the Metro Board of Directors Finance and Administration Committee. “It is truly an investment in the well-being of our customers.”

The Metro Finance and Administration committee endorsed the reimbursable project today (Sept. 16) and the full Metro Board of Directors will vote on the enhancement project at its Sept. 30 meeting.
