Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on the Orange, Blue, Yellow and Green lines


Upgrades being made to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (September 24-26) Metro will install new cross ties, upgrade its track, and trim weeds on the Orange, Blue, Yellow and Green lines to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, riders can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Orange Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace cross ties and weld new rail on the tracks in that area to keep them in a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, September 24, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, September 26.

Throughout the weekend, every other Orange Line train traveling in the direction of the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station will terminate at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station and return to the New Carrollton Metrorail station.

Blue and Yellow Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Pentagon City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to all Metro weld new rail on the tracks in that area to keep them in a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26.

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26, Blue Line trains will operate approximately every 30 minutes between the Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations. On Saturday, September 25, Blue Line trains will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station at approximately 23 minutes and 53 minutes after the hour, and Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station at approximately 12 minutes and 42 minutes after the hour. On Sunday, September 26, Blue Line trains will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station at approximately 5 minutes and 35 minutes after the hour and Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station at approximately 22 minutes and 52 minutes after the hour.

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26, Yellow Line trains will operate approximately every 30 minutes between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station. On Saturday, September 25, Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station at approximately 29 and 59 minutes after the hour and Yellow Line trains will depart the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station at approximately 11 minutes and 41 minutes after the hour. On Sunday, September 26, Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station at approximately 11 minutes and 41 minutes after the hour and Yellow Line trains will depart the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station at approximately 21 minutes and 51 minutes after the hour.

Green Line Weed Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Branch Avenue and Naylor Road Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to trim weeds along the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 26.
