Metro sets October weeknight track maintenance schedule


Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes for weeknight travel while Metro works to maintain a state of good repair on the rails

Rockville track workOn most weeknights and some weekdays in October, Metro employees will replace rail, cross ties, weld new rail on the tracks, repair concrete slabs underneath the rails and repair station platforms in an effort to maintain the rail system in a state of good repair and help provide reliable service. Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes of additional travel time to their schedules Sunday to Thursday nights between 10 p.m. and closing (midnight) on all rail lines and some weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers should expect lengthy waits between trains during this timeframe.

Red Line Track Platform Repair Work Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro personnel to make necessary repairs to the Rockville Metrorail station’s deteriorated platform to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) from Oct. 4 to 7; Oct. 12 to 14; and Oct. 18 to 21.

This portion of vital work on the Red Line between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations is part of the Red Line rehabilitation project, which is extending the lifecycle of the platforms, track and related systems by rebuilding those areas.

Red Line Cross Tie Installation – Oct. 24 to 28

Trains will share one track between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) from Oct. 24 to 28 to allow Metro personnel to install new cross ties on the tracks in that area so customers should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time

Red Line Station Improvement Work Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow personnel to make station improvements to maintain reliable service through that area of the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) from Oct. 4 to 7; Oct. 12 to 14; and Oct. 17 to 21; Oct. 24 to Oct. 28; and Oct. 31.

Blue Line Concrete Slab Track Maintenance Sunday through Thursday nights

Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to replace the systems that support the concrete slabs underneath the rails to help maintain reliable rail service. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) from Oct. 3 to 7; Oct. 12 to 14; Oct. 18 to 21; and Oct. 27 to 28.

Orange Line Daytime Cross Tie Installation Maintenance – Oct. 4 to 7

Metrorail customers traveling between the West Falls Church-VT/UVA and East Falls Church Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will install new cross ties on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Oct. 4 to 7.

Orange Line New Rail Installation Maintenance – Oct. 4 to 5 and Oct. 31

Metrorail customers traveling between the Ballston-MU and East Falls Church Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will install new rail on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) from Oct. 4 to 5; and Oct. 31.

Orange Line New Rail and Cross Tie Installation Maintenance – Oct. 6 to 7, Oct. 12 to 14 and Oct. 27 to 28

Metrorail customers traveling between the Vienna-Fairfax/GMU and West Falls Church-VT/UVA and East Falls Church Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will install new cross ties and new rail in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. to closing (midnight), on Oct. 6 to 7; Oct. 12 to 14; and Oct. 27 to 28.

Orange Line Communications Cable Installation - Oct. 18 to 21

Metrorail customers traveling between the Clarendon and Ballston-MU Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time while personnel install communications cable in support of expanded cell phone coverage throughout the Metrorail stations. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. to closing (midnight) from Oct. 18 to 21.

Orange and Blue Line New Rail Installation Maintenance - Oct. 25 to 26

Metrorail customers traveling between the Foggy Bottom-GWU and Rosslyn Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. to closing (midnight) on Oct. 25 and 26.

Blue and Yellow Line New Rail Installation Maintenance - Oct. 12

Metrorail customers traveling between the Pentagon City and Braddock Road Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. to closing (midnight) on Oct. 12.

Blue Line New Rail Installation Maintenance - Oct. 18 and 19

Metrorail customers traveling between the Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. to closing (midnight) on Oct. 18 and 19.

Green Line New Rail Installation Maintenance - Oct. 4 and 5

Metrorail customers traveling between the Fort Totten and Prince George’s Plaza Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will weld new rail on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. through closing (midnight) on Oct. 4 and 5.

Green Line Communications Cable Installation - Oct. 25 to 28

Metrorail customers traveling between the Georgia Avenue-Petworth and Fort Totten Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time while personnel install communications cable in support of expanded cell phone coverage throughout the Metrorail stations. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. to closing (midnight) from Oct. 25 to 28.
