Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on Red, Orange and Green lines

Upgrades to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (October 29-31) Metro will upgrade its platforms, rail bridges, track and begin stabilization repairs at the Cheverly Metrorail station to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, Red, Orange and Green Line trains will be single-tracking, and riders should expect their trips to take up to 30 minutes longer than usual.

Red Line Platform Repairs

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will repair the deteriorated platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, October 29, to closing on Sunday, October 31.

Red Line Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will conduct necessary maintenance on a portion of the tracks outside the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station. This work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, October 29, to closing on Sunday, October 31.

On Saturday, October 30, and Sunday, October 31, all Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

For riders traveling between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations, trains will operate approximately every 8 to 9 minutes.

Orange Line Ground Stabilization

Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Cheverly Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will make repairs to stabilize the ground outside the Cheverly Metrorail station that shifted because of work by a developer on adjacent property. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, October 29, to closing on Saturday, October 30.

Green Line Rail Installation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Fort Totten and Prince George’s Plaza Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to weld new rail on the tracks in that area to keep them in a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31.

During this time, all Yellow Line trains will operate between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail stations.
