Metro winds down weekend track circuit maintenance, repairs at Cheverly

Minnesota Ave, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton stations to reopen Monday morning

The replacement of track circuits outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station, preliminary repairs outside the Cheverly Metrorail station and several maintenance projects on the Orange Line that closed the Minnesota Avenue, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover and New Carrollton Metrorail stations and stopped train service between the Stadium-Armory and Benning Road Metrorail stations this weekend is progressing on schedule. Regular Blue and Orange Line service will resume on Monday, Nov. 8.

This weekend, Metro is making preliminary repairs to stabilize the ground, the abutment and aerial structure outside the Cheverly Metrorail station because a developer performed work on land adjacent to Metro property that shifted the ground and caused movement of Metro’s aerial structure. Metro is also installing new track circuits outside the Stadium-Armory Metrorail station, to comply with a National Transportation Safety Board recommendation. In addition, Metro is also replacing 4,290 feet of track, 680 insulators, 2,418 rail ties, 650 track fasteners and two track switches at the New Carrollton Metrorail station and conducting platform repairs at the Minnesota Avenue Metrorail station to maximize the amount of work to be done while there are no trains in the area.

The free shuttle buses have been busy throughout the weekend with buses filling up as trains empty at the Stadium-Armory and Benning Road Metrorail stations. Through Saturday, Nov. 6, about 18,944 people have used the shuttle buses to help complete their trips.

To inform customers about the track work, signs and banners were posted at key locations; advertisements were placed; messages were posted on platform display signs; and a brochure was produced in English and Spanish. Throughout the weekend, customers are hearing system-wide rail station and train operator announcements and receiving e-mail and Twitter alerts. Thirty-four Metro employees are working 68 shifts to assist customers this weekend.

Today, the Orange Line is operating only between the Vienna-Fairfax/GMU and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations. The Blue Line is split in two sections, operating between the Franconia-Springfield and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations and between the Largo Town Center and Benning Road Metrorail stations.

Orange Line trains are operating approximately every 15 minutes during the day and after 9:30 p.m., they will operate approximately every 20 minutes. All Blue Line trains are operating approximately every 30 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Stadium-Armory and between the Largo Town Center and Benning Road Metrorail stations.
