Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on all five Metrorail lines


Upgrades to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (November 12-14) Metro will upgrade its platforms, rail bridges, install new crossties and new track to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, trains on all lines will be single-tracking, and riders should expect their trips to take up to 30 minutes longer than usual.

Red Line Platform Repairs, Track Maintenance

Metrorail customers traveling between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will repair the deteriorated platform at the Rockville Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, November 12, to closing on Sunday, November 14.

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time because Metro will conduct necessary maintenance on a portion of the tracks outside the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station. This work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area. Trains will share one track between these locations the entire weekend from 10 p.m. Friday, November 12, to closing on Sunday, November 14.

On Saturday, November 13, and Sunday, November 14, Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations.

For riders traveling between the Grosvenor-Strathmore and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations, trains will operate approximately every 8 to 9 minutes.

Orange Line Cross Tie Installation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will replace cross ties on the tracks in that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, November 12, to closing on Sunday, November 14.

Throughout the weekend, every other Orange Line train traveling in the direction of the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail station will terminate at the West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail station and return to the New Carrollton Metrorail station.

Blue and Yellow Line Aerial Structure Repairs

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because Metro will make repairs on the aerial structure outside the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Metrorail station to return it to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14.

During this time, all Yellow Line trains will operate approximately every 30 minutes between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail stations. Yellow Line trains will depart the Huntington Metrorail station approximately at six minutes and 36 minutes after the hour. Yellow Line trains will depart the Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center Metrorail station at approximately 16 minutes and 46 minutes after the hour. Upon conclusion of single-tracking from 6 p.m. to closing, Yellow Line trains will operate approximately every 15 to 20 minutes between the Huntington and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.

Blue Line trains will operate every 30 minutes between the Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations. Blue Line trains will depart the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station approximately at the top of the hour and 30 minutes after the hour. Blue Line trains will depart the Largo Town Center Metrorail station approximately at 16 minutes and 46 minutes after the hour. Upon conclusion of single-tracking from 6 p.m. to closing, Blue Line trains will operate approximately every 15 to 20 minutes between the Franconia-Springfield and Largo Town Center Metrorail stations.

Green Line Rail Installation

Metrorail customers traveling between the Prince George’s Plaza and College Park-U of Md Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to weld new rail on the tracks in that area to keep them in a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14.
