Metro sets January late-night track maintenance schedule


Customers should add 20 to 30 minutes for weeknight travel while Metro works to maintain a state of good repair on the rails

From 10 p.m. to closing on most weeknights in January, Metro employees will weld new rail on the tracks, replace fasteners, repair concrete slabs underneath the rails, make station improvements and conduct rail switch work to maintain the rail system in a state of good repair and help ensure reliable service. Customers traveling during these hours should add up to 30 minutes of travel time to their schedules

Red Line Late-Night Service Mondays through Thursdays

Metro will make repairs to the area underneath the rails at various locations on the Red Line. Trains will share one track after 10 p.m. between the New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U and Fort Totten Metrorail stations from Jan. 5 to 6; between the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood and Takoma Metrorail stations on Jan. 10; and between the Fort Totten and Silver Spring Metrorail stations from Jan. 11 to 13 and riders should add 30 minutes to their travel time if they are passing through the area.

Late-night riders between the Friendship Heights and Van Ness-UDC Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel time while Metro installs new fasteners and welds new rail on the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from Jan. 5 to 6; Jan. 10 to 13; Jan. 18 to 20; and Jan. 24 to 27.

Late-night travelers between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel time while Metro makes station improvements to maintain reliable service through that area of the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations from Jan. 18 to 20; Jan. 23 to 27; and Jan. 31.

Blue and Orange Line Late-Night service in January

Customers traveling between the Arlington Cemetery and McPherson Square Metrorail stations on the Blue Line and between the Clarendon and McPherson Square Metrorail stations on the Orange Line should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time while Metro conducts work on the rail switch at the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metrorail station in preparation for a major rail switch replacement project during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend. Trains will share one track between these locations after 10 p.m. from Jan. 5 to 6; and Jan. 9 to 13.

Customers traveling between the McPherson Square and Federal Center SW Metrorail stations should add 30 minutes to their travel time while Metro conducts work on the rail switch at the Smithsonian Metrorail station in preparation for a major rail switch replacement project during the Presidents Day Holiday Weekend. Trains will share one track between these locations after 10 p.m. on Jan. 26, 27 and 31.

Late-night travelers between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metrorail stations should add 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to replace the systems that support the concrete slabs underneath the rails. This work helps maintain reliable rail service and provide a smooth ride. Trains will share one track between these locations after 10 p.m. from Jan. 18 to 20; and Jan. 24 to 27.

Riders traveling between the Clarendon and Ballston-MU Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel time while Metro welds new rail on the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations after 10 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Green Line Late-Night Service – Jan. 24 and 25

Riders traveling between the Southern Avenue and Anacostia Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel time while Metro welds new rail on the tracks. Trains will share one track between these locations after 10 p.m. on Jan. 24 and 25.
