Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on Metro's Blue and Red Lines

Upgrades to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (Jan.7-9) Metro will upgrade its track and stations to improve long-term reliability and service. This crucial work which includes repairing tunnel leaks and repairing rail fasteners is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair and means trains on the Blue and Red lines will be single-tracking, and riders should expect their trips to take 20 to 30 minutes longer than usual.

Blue Line Service

Metrorail customers traveling between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant Metrorail stations should add 30 minutes to their travel time to allow Metro to replace concrete slabs underneath the rails to help ensure more reliable service, provide a smoother ride and return that area to a state of good repair. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, to closing (midnight) on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street Metrorail stations should add 30 minutes to their travel time because of maintenance work related to the Wilson Bridge Project. Trains will share one track between these locations from 11 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7 to closing on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Red Line Service

Metrorail customers traveling between the Friendship Heights and Van Ness-UDC Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel times because Metro will replace fasteners and repair tunnel leaks. This work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area of the track. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, to closing on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add at least 20 minutes to their travel time to allow personnel to make track and station improvements that will help improve reliable service through that area. Trains will share one track between these locations from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, to closing on Sunday, Jan. 9. This vital work is part of the Red Line rehabilitation project, which is extending the lifecycle of the track and related systems by rebuilding those areas.

From Jan. 8 to Jan. 9, Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations. From 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., a separate segment of the Red Line will operate approximately every 8 minutes between the Van Ness-UDC and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations.
