Board Committee Approves Southwestern Bus Garage Name

Construction underway at site of old D.C. Village

Metro’s Customer Service and Operations Committee has endorsed naming a new bus garage that is currently under construction the "Southwestern Bus Garage." The full Board will consider the name at its Jan. 27 meeting.

Bus garages in the District of Columbia are typically named for the section of the city in which they are located, such as Northern and Western Bus Garages. Naming the new bus garage at this time will ensure that that the facility’s proper name is carried on permits and any other required legal documents from the start of construction.

The Southeastern Bus Garage was torn down to make way for the Washington Nationals ballpark and to eliminate potential conflicts with motorist and pedestrian traffic going to the ballpark. The Board approved actions to sell the old garage site and purchase property from the District of Columbia Government at D.C. Village to build a new garage. The facility is under construction and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2012.
