Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on Red and Orange Lines

Upgrades to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (Jan.21-23) Metro will upgrade areas of track and the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project will continue construction activities on the Orange Line. This crucial work, which includes repairing rail fasteners and repairing tunnel leaks, is critical to maintain the railroad and ensure reliable service. During the work, trains on the Red and Orange lines will be single-tracking from 10 p.m., Friday, Jan. 21 to closing on Sunday, Jan. 23.

Red Line Service

Metrorail customers traveling between the Friendship Heights and Medical Center Metrorail stations should allow an extra 20 minutes to travel while Metro single-tracks to replace fasteners, repair tunnel leaks and install communications cables in support of expanded cell phone coverage throughout the Metrorail system. This work is necessary to maintain reliable service through that area.

On Saturday, Jan. 22 and Sunday, Jan. 23, Red Line trains will depart approximately every 20 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., more frequent service will be offered on the Red Line between the Friendship Heights and Silver Spring Metrorail stations.

Orange Line Service

Metrorail customers traveling between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church-VT/UVA Metrorail stations should allow an extra 20 minutes to travel while Metro single-tracks to replace rail and insulators and allows the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project to conduct major construction activities that will eventually connect the new rail line to the existing Metrorail system.
