Weekend renovation to improve reliability, service on Red and Blue Lines

Upgrades to improve efficiency, performance

This weekend (Feb. 4-6) Metro will continue its efforts to rebuild the Metrorail system by upgrading its track and infrastructure systems. As a result of this critical work, trains on the Red and Blue lines will single-track from 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 4 to closing on Sunday, Feb 6. When the work is complete, it will mean riders will have a safer, smoother ride.

Red Line Service

Metrorail customers traveling between the Friendship Heights and Medical Center Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel times while Metro replaces fasteners, welds new rail and installs communications cables in support of expanded cell phone coverage throughout the Metrorail system. This work is necessary to maintain safe and reliable service through that area of the track.

Metrorail customers traveling between the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail stations should add 20 minutes to their travel time to allow personnel to repairs to the aerial structure outside the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metrorail station that will help improve reliable service through that area.

On Feb. 5 and Feb. 6, Red Line trains will depart approximately every 15 minutes from the Shady Grove and Glenmont Metrorail stations. From 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., a separate segment of the Red Line will operate approximately every 8 minutes between the Van Ness-UDC and New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U Metrorail stations.

Blue Line Service

Metrorail customers traveling between the Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street Metrorail stations should add at least 30 minutes to their travel time because of maintenance work related to the Wilson Bridge Project.
