Metro News Release

For immediate release: February 22, 2011

Metrorail normal, Metrobuses, MetroAccess start the day on time

Inclement weather expected to have only minor impact on service

Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess service will start the day on time today, Tuesday, Feb. 22, with the intent of providing normal service in spite of weather forecasts for a few inches of snow.

Bus supervisors will be monitoring the conditions of roadways throughout the day to ensure buses will be able to pass safely through neighborhoods. Bus route H12 will be on the snow emergency route to start the day due to unsafe conditions. The buses will return to serve the full route when it is safe to pass. Detoured routes will be posted on Metro’s web site. Buses are likely to be running behind schedule due to the impact of weather on road conditions.

Customers are encouraged to call NextBus at 202-637-7000 or check Metro’s NextBus Web site here  to help determine when the next bus will arrive.

MetroAccess will also operate as usual and supervisors will monitor road conditions throughout the day. Customers with scheduled rides may call (301) 562-5360 for a status update of their ride. MetroAccess vehicles are likely to be running behind schedule due to the impact of weather on road conditions.

Metro has 559 pieces of equipment to help combat ice and snow and Metro workers are using that equipment to remove snow and ice from station entrances and platforms, to clear the way to allow buses to exit the garages and to keep the tracks clear. Riders are encouraged to use caution when walking to bus stops and when entering and exiting Metrorail stations as sidewalks and station platforms are slippery.

There are a variety of ways for Metro customers to stay informed during inclement weather. Metro constantly updates local news media of Metro service changes. Information is also available at metroopensdoors.com on the left side of the home page or by calling Metro at 202-637-7000. Customers can also subscribe to e-Alerts to receive up-to-date service disruption information on Metrorail and MetroAccess.
