Metro seeks input on Metrobus A, Y Line improvements

Transportation agencies, riders to discuss service issues, potential solutions

Metro and transportation agencies in the District of Columbia and Maryland will host two public meetings this month in support of the Metrobus A and Y Line studies to improve bus service along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast Washington and Georgia Avenue in Maryland.

The meetings are part of ongoing studies to improve Metrobus service on some of the region’s most heavily used bus lines. They are not related to the public hearings on the FY2012 budget, which are also scheduled to take place this month.

Riders are encouraged to attend the following meetings to provide input on service improvements to the A and Y Metrobus lines:

A Line Public Meeting: 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Savoy Elementary School, 2400 Shannon Place SE, Washington, DC. The school is located one block east of the Anacostia Metrorail station.

Y Line Public Meeting: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the First Baptist Church of Wheaton, 10914 Georgia Avenue. The church is located on the Metrobus Y Line, and one block south of the Wheaton Metrorail station.

The A Line provides service along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast Washington and includes the Anacostia-Congress Heights Line (A2, A6, A7, A8, A42, A46, A48), Anacostia-Fort Drum Line (A4, A5) and South Capitol Street Line (A9). Routes A42, A46 and A48 are late-night services that run between Southern Avenue & South Capitol Street and 10th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue NW when Metrorail is not operating. Average weekday ridership of about 14,300 makes the combined lines among the most heavily used in the Metrobus system. The transit corridor is an important link between the residential areas of Southeast Washington and the Anacostia Metrorail station.

The Georgia Avenue-Maryland Line (Y5, Y7, Y8, Y9) provides bus service between the Silver Spring Metrorail station and Montgomery General Hospital via Georgia Avenue. Average weekday ridership is about 7,500 passengers. The transit corridor is an important means of travel for residents of the communities that border Georgia Avenue, including Silver Spring, Wheaton, Aspen Hill and Leisure World. The line also provides access to the Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont Metrorail stations, in addition to the Norbeck Road Park-and-Ride Lot and Montgomery General Hospital.
