Blue and Red Line service adjustments planned for the weekend of June 3 to 5


Buses replace trains on the Blue Line between Franconia-Springfield and King Street

Metro will advance necessary safety and reliability work on the Blue and Red lines during the weekend of June 3 to 5, resulting in temporary service changes for some customers.

On Sunday, June 5, the Virginia Department of Transportation will perform bridge replacement work on the Telegraph Road Bridge near King Street Station. To allow for this work, buses will replace Blue Line trains between Franconia-Springfield and King Street stations all day Sunday.

Customers are advised:
• Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street stations will be closed Sunday, June 5.
• Free shuttle buses will operate between Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Avenue stations.
• Affected customers should allow 30 additional minutes of travel time.
• All Blue Line trains will operate between Largo Town Center and Huntington stations approximately every 20 minutes.
• Metro employees will be available Sunday, June 5, at Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn Street and King Street stations to assist customers using the free shuttle bus service.
• Normal rail service will resume with start of service on Monday, June 6.

Other track work during the weekend of June 3-5, 2011:

Blue Line

• From 10 p.m., Friday, June 3 through closing on Sunday, June 5, Blue Line trains will share one track between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant stations as Metro crews make repairs to the floating slabs beneath the rails to provide a smoother ride. Customers should allow 20 minutes additional travel time through the work zone.

• From 5 a.m. through closing on Saturday, June 4, all Blue Line trains will operate between Huntington and Largo Town Center stations. Metro will operate a shuttle train on a single track between Franconia-Springfield and King Street stations while track upgrades take place.

• Throughout the weekend, every other Blue Line train traveling in the direction of Largo Town Center will terminate at Stadium-Armory Station.

Red Line

• From 9:30 p.m., Friday, June 3 through closing on Sunday, June 5, Red Line trains will share one track between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Twinbrook stations as Metro conducts platform rehabilitation work at White Flint and Twinbrook stations.

• From 10 p.m., Friday, June 3 through closing on Sunday, June 5, Red Line trains will share one track between Takoma and Forest Glen stations to allow for upgrades to train control rooms.

• Throughout the weekend, all Red Line trains will operate approximately every 24 minutes between the Shady Grove and Glenmont stations.

• On Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., additional Red Line trains will operate between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Takoma stations, resulting service about every 12 minutes between these stations.
