Bowser, Bulger join Metro Board


New members represent the District of Columbia

Muriel Bowser and Thomas J. Bulger joined the Metro Board of Directors today, July 21, 2011. They both represent the District of Columbia.

Bowser, a District of Columbia Councilmember representing Ward 4, succeeds Tommy Wells as a principal director. She chairs the Committee on Government Operations and serves on the Committee on Environment, Public Works and Transportation, the Committee on the Judiciary, the Committee on Finance and Revenue as well as the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs. Prior to her election to the Council of the District of Columbia in 2007, Bowser oversaw a downtown transportation management district where she was responsible for ensuring that balanced transportation options were available to residents, workers and visitors. Bowser also has worked with over 10 local jurisdictions around the Metropolitan Washington Region promoting alternative transportation options with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG). Bowser currently serves as the chair of COG’s region-wide Transportation Planning Board.

Bulger, President of Government Relations Inc. succeeds Michael Brown as an alternate director. He has been a Federal advocate and policy consultant representing private and public clients before Congress and the Administration. After spending the first few years of his career in the Office of Management and Budget in Fairfax County, Va., Bulger was an environmental policy director and legislative representative at the National Association of Counties. He also served on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Tolling Authority for the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, Bulger serves as policy advisor to the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission created by SAFETEA-LU. The commission is tasked with plotting a course for the Federal Transportation system for the next 50 years.

The Metro Board of Directors is comprised of 16 members representing the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and the federal government. There currently are two vacancies on the Board.
