Bus delays expected Friday afternoon in Northern Virginia due to motorcycle ride

I-66 and Route 110 expected to be affected

Metro is advising customers of possible bus service impacts due to The America’s 9/11 Foundation motorcycle ride, which is expected to shut down several major roads in Northern Virginia on Friday, August 19, 2011.

The America’s 9/11 Foundation has organized a motorcycle ride through six states and Washington, D.C. to commemorate the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  As riders travel to the Pentagon on Friday afternoon, several major roads will be shut down during the afternoon hours (approximately 2-4 p.m.):

  • I-66 eastbound from the Beltway to Route 110
  • Route 110 southbound from I-66 to the Pentagon

Bus customers traveling to or near the Pentagon and Crystal City should expect delays due to road closures and traffic conditions.

Metrobus route 5A will provide service from all regular bus stops to and from Dulles Airport on Friday afternoon.  Metro will operate extra buses on the 5A route to compensate for the expected delays; however, customers should consider alternate routes or allow plenty of extra travel time due to expected traffic.

In addition, Metro has been advised that Washington Flyer plans to suspend service during the afternoon hours Friday.  As a result, ridership on the 5A is expected to be heavier than normal.
