Metro to honor accessibility advocates

Nominations sought for the Richard W. Heddinger Award

Metro’s Department of Access Services and the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) will honor accessibility advocates at the first-ever Accessibility Excellence Awards Ceremony in December. The ceremony will honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the accessibility of Metro in the Washington metropolitan area.

The program will feature two lifetime achievement awards, the Richard W. Heddinger Award and Dr. Rosalyn M. Simon Award. The Richard W. Heddinger Award, which was established in 2006 in honor of the AAC’s first chairman and a legendary advocate for the accessibility of Metro, recognizes advocates and members of the disability community. A new award, the Dr. Rosalyn M. Simon Award, will recognize industry professionals. The award was established in honor of a former Metro employee and internationally renowned ADA expert.

Metro is seeking nominations for the Richard W. Heddinger Award from the public. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Oct. 31. Nominees should meet the following criteria:

  • Disability advocates who have worked to support successful efforts to improve accessibility in Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess services;
  • Organizations that have made significant efforts to inform and educate the public about Metro’s accessibility issues and solutions; and
  • Advisory committee members who have contributed long-term, steadfast quality leadership to enhance Metro’s accessibility in the region.
