Metro B-Roll of Green Line Track Work

U Street Station - Saturday, October 8, 2011

This weekend, crews are installing new NTSB-recommended track switches on the Green/Yellow lines near U Street Station.  First, the old track segments and switches must be removed. Then, new switches are moved into position and welded to the rails at each end of the worksite.  Four switches make up the cross-over, allowing trains to move from one track to the other in either direction.  Because all four switches must be changed at the same time, both tracks must be taken out of service to perform the work.  The project is taking place over a three-day weekend to give crews at least 76 hours for construction and testing prior to Tuesday morning's commute.
